Animal skins are perishable goods and must be treated as such. Pioneer Taxidermy cannot be responsible for the care of skins and horns before they reach us. Climate, moisture, and field care are variables that must be taken seriously to ensure good mountable specimens. We encourage you to know and understand these factors to aid us in creating a quality mount for you.

The following information will assist you in properly caring for your trophy in the field, as always we are available to you for prehunt advice. We are willing to do whatever we can to ensue that your trophy receives the best of care.

Good hunting,

Larry

Skinning for a full shoulder mount

The first step to a beautiful mount is proper field care. If you lack the knowledge or the skill to properly cape your trophy for mounting, please call us for assistance. We are committed to helping you get the highest quality mount possible.

The following procedure applies to all antlered and horned animals

As a general rule we prefer to have the entire front half of the skin for a full shoulder mount

  1. When field dressing an animal that is intended to be mounted; never make the belly incision beyond the brisket.
  2. For skinning, it is highly recommended that the animal be hung from its gambrels to make the job cleaner and easier.
  3. After field dressing make an incision around the entire body beginning at the center of the body, point D. this will insure that we have plenty of skin to work with.
  4. beginning at point A, make another incision up the back of the neck to the base of the skull / neck junction, point B
  5. Make an incision around each leg directly below the elbow at point c. continue the incision up the back of each leg to point D at the belly incision.
  6. The cape can now be skinned forward to the base of the skull.
  7. When you reach the head / neck junction, cut into the neck to the spinal column and completely around the neck. After cutting through the neck all the way around, cut through the spinal column with a bone saw to free the head from the rest of the body.
  8. Lay the cape open flesh side up for a few minutes to cool, then, roll it up flesh side in. The head and cape may now be transported to us for the remainder of the skinning. If you cannot bring it to us right away, the entire head should be refrigerated or frozen.
  9. NEVER SALT ANY SKIN THAT HAS NOT BEEN COMPLETELY FLESHED. SALT WIL DESTROY A SKIN, AS QUICKLY AS IT WILL PRESERVE IT.
